Responsible Care NZ is the widely respected, not-for-profit chemical industry association. Established in 1986 as the NZ Chemical Industry Council, we are one of 63 chemical associations worldwide implementing the Canadian-born Responsible Care® Safety, Health and Environmental Protection initiative.

Singled out by the United Nations Secretary General as a role model for influential voluntary industry initiatives, Responsible Care® participants are committed to safely managing the chemicals we all need to sustain and advance our quality of life.

From a modest beginning, with a handful of key multi-national and local chemical manufacturers and importers, our dynamic and diverse Members now represent the entire product lifecycle, from manufacture to disposal.

Our Members are large and small businesses, all dedicated to safeguarding employees, contractors and customers by safely managing their chemical inventories. Our Partners include healthcare providers, the Armed Forces and government agencies.

We provide free chemical safety advice to schools and the emergency services.

Our Members speak highly of our comprehensive products and services (link: ‘see here’) which add value for Members and non-Members alike.

Talk to us today about how Membership not only adds value to your business, but also provides peace of mind by ensuring you meet and exceed your workplace chemical safety obligations.

They do. The Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 2015 took effect in 2016 and the later, complex Hazardous Substances regulations which took effect in 2017 increased your compliance obligations.

This places additional burden on your PiC (Person in Charge of Premises or Undertaking) and particularly the person responsible for the day to day conduct of the site.

Fortunately, we can help! Every day, we enable worried business operators to navigate complex and prescriptive health and safety requirements with timely, accurate compliance advice.

If you are not compliant, you certainly should be!

Non-compliance usually means exposing your employees, your site neighbours and perhaps a customer, to risk. Unsafe chemical management can result in a major incident putting people at risk and jeopardising your business.

Would your business survive, knowing you had harmed somebody or incurred a heavy fine putting you, your business reputation and your future at risk? Talk to us today about our unique and cost-effective products and services which help ensure a safe and healthy workplace, not to mention your peace of mind.

We can! One of the most beneficial services we offer is a tour of your site by one of our compliance experts. This ‘walk and talk’ will identify your compliance obligations, discuss what needs to be done and most importantly, the solutions available. We also offer a unique site certification scheme PRINCE® which confirms your success in safely managing your chemical inventory.

Under New Zealand’s safe chemical management system, the product SDS is the key source of information for those responding to an emergency involving the substance. It is therefore critical the SDS includes:

  • An accurate GHS classification;
  • A HSNO approval reference;
  • A 24/7 contact number from which emergency services can quickly obtain detailed product information.

In the workplace (including the transport phase), a compliant SDS must be available within 10 minutes. The SDS should not be more than five years old since its last review. The New Zealand format and content reflects international regulations, standards and best industry practice.

The RCNZ Approved Code of Practice ‘Preparation of Safety Sheets’ is invaluable for companies creating and regularly revising SDS. Alternatively, we can upgrade your SDS to NZ compliance – just email us the SDS that needs upgrading.

For manufacturers and importers with non-compliant SDS, we can review a sample and advise what you need to do to upgrade to NZ compliance. If more extensive work is required, we will quote for that work. Please note every business is different, so it’s best to call us to discuss how we can help. Email us at info@responsiblecarenz.com

Yes, for now. These national performance standards reflect best industry practice and offer some protection against prosecution. Chemical suppliers believe our proven HSNO Approved Codes (see here) are superior to good practice guides, which often lack the necessary detail and do not afford protection against legal action.

One of our experts can visit your site for an informal ‘walk and talk’ with you/your site manager to identify chemical safety issues arising from your obligations under our complex workplace health and safety legislation – focusing on the chemicals you have on site. This popular assessment quickly identifies what you will need to address and most importantly, achieve compliance. The visit enables you to discuss non-compliance issues without fear of enforcement action.

These informative visits are an ideal and cost-effective way to identify your chemical safety obligations together with the best solution. Contact us today to arrange your personal site assessment.
